Rebecca Opong is the founder and owner of African Image Beauty Supply Salon (AIBSS) located in the Los Angeles, California area. She opened her shop back in 1987, and is one of the few Black-owned beauty supply stores in the area. This year, she is celebrating her 30th year in business! Rebecca, a native of Accra, Ghana (West Africa), first sold African clothing and fabrics at her store. When she saw that there was a demand for hair products for Black women, she got her license in cosmetology and began braiding hair. She also started selling hair and skin care products like 100% Black soap, African shea butter, weaves, and other items that cater to Black women. She even sold African movies!

What do you do when you own 100 hats? You start your own hat business! That’s what Georgiette Morgan-Thomas did when she bought the S & S Hat Company in Philadelphia in 2015. The hat manufacturer is now called American Hats.
Georgiette, who is also a local pastor, has always loved hats and wears them all the time. She was the proud owner of 100 hats when the opportunity arose for her to not just wear hats, but make them. So, she invested more than $100K and bought the business. As the previous owner did, she continues to manufacture hats for both women and men, using only the finest materials.
Since she began, she has been able to increase her business by 40 percent. Last year alone, she sold over 3,000 hats, ranging from $90 to almost $400 each. You might think it’d be tough finding traditional African ingredients in the cream-and-butter capital of the world, but Niang has no trouble. “It’s not cheap,” she says, but it’s doable, and she’s managed to offer up some special treats, like exotic sodas flavored with baobab and hibiscus. Serving African food in the French capital can be a bit tricky, though, since you have to tone down the spice to appeal to Parisian palates, but her Senegalese clients will miss the heat if it isn’t there, so she deftly negotiates by providing tiny pots of spicy sauce that can be used to punch up the flavors if need be. And that’s a huge part of her business: More than 75 percent of France’s immigrants from developing countries are coming from Africa according to an OECD report, and while North Africa accounted for the most emigrants — 2.3 million of France’s residents came from Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco alone — Senegal, Mali and the Ivory Coast each have yielded tens of thousands of newcomers.

Bomade Vodka is a light, fresh lemonade-infused vodka, that was originally hand-crafted in the kitchen of a married couple in Atlanta. When they couldn’t find a flavored vodka with a smooth, fruit taste, they created it! After closing this gap in the vodka market with a premium, yet affordable, spirit that is flavored with real fruit – instead of a lot of sugar that produces a sweet or syrupy taste – the demand quickly grew. It was not long until their friends and family dubbed it “the bomb lemonade,” which organically shortened to “Bom-Ade.” As a small mom-and-pop operation, the couple sought partnership with Phil Pritchard of Pritchard’s Distellery is Kelso, TN, who gladly helped them with the mass production of Bomade Vodka.
